iWeb, one click publishing? Think again.

I know this is off subject but I have to pass it on.

For weeks now I have been going nuts trying to trick iWeb into publishing. It has some kind of network conflict bug and the new version (1.1.2) has not helped. All I get are nice little drop down error messages "Mac servers are busy, try back in a few minutes" or “Publishing failed due to a network error”

Turns out the servers are not busy and neither are the code-warriors who signed off on this clunker of an app. It looks fast, the seats are comfy, it takes off nicely but crashes on landing every time.

I came across a work around and for those who have been dealing with similar problems this is manna from heaven.

Here is the thread and Randofly is the white knight. Thanks mate, you have made my day.

To save you time here is the work around in detail.

1. Open Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor, click on Network to monitor sent activity. You will now be able to monitor the upload process.

2. Open iWeb

3. Make all your edits

4. Publish, iWeb will go thru the process of creating pages, at this time sent activity will be zero. Sent activity jumps up when iWeb completes creating pages. iWeb will now publish your entire site whether it's 1 mb or 1 gb.

5. Let it error on whatever jpg or png, hit ok. Even though there's an error, iWeb is still uploading as seen in the Activity Monitor.

6. Leave iWeb open until sent activity drops back to zero. You can track the total amount uploaded in Activity Monitor.

7. Close iWeb

8. Delete prepublishstate.plist in your domain file. This file tracks what still needs to be uploaded to .mac. Deleting it forces iWeb to think all your changes have been uploaded. To get to your domain file, go to ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb. Hold down the ctrl key and click on it, select "show package contents".

9. Repeat for any other edits. You will have to delete the prepublishstate.plist file after every time you publish. After this first full upload, deleting the plist file, iWeb will only upload changed or added pages and not the entire site.

So much for one click publishing! I'm persevering because I have invested a lot of time and money in this solution and I want it to work.... just like my narcoleptic powerbook actually.

Interestingly Apple are stonewalling iWeb complaints and seem unable to come up with a fix. I read that they shut down one iWeb thread after it got out of control it seems.... is this what we can expect in the future?

Coming up with names like 'Bootcamp" for software may be amusing on one level but perhaps it tells us how Apple's top brass see the world these days.

Our love for Apple is NOT being returned.
