We loved Dorothy for many reasons. We're red diaper babies who helped  build the new left, and unlike many of her Party compatriots, Dorothy understood why there needed to be that new movement, and eventually she joined it. She was a model of how to combine passion and commitment with sharp sense of self-criticism and self -reflection. She was a model, too, of how to be politically devoted while at the same time being devoted to friends and family. She knew how to express both her political understanding and personal caring. And she was a model of life-time commitment. You had the feeling that her commitment helped her overcome debility and resist death. Maybe even her frustration in her last years at being able to do so little somehow fueled her life force. Maybe her passion will fuel ours.
