Sculptor-Richard Alfred Mermaid Island The mermaid group was started during the summer of 2005. For the past 3 years Richard Alfred has been sculpting life sized mermaids at the Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland, Maine. “I have been demonstrating pottery and sculpture at the Maine Lobster Festival for almost 30 years. I had the idea during the 2004 festival to try to sculpt a life size mermaid each year for a while. Next summer will be the 4th mermaid. I don’t know how many will be created. I am just taking it 1 year at a time. Now that there are 3 mermaids I can start to work on the composition of the sculpture and how the figures interact with each other.” Richard Alfred
