Whether you’re talking about movie poster art, or classic opening credit sequences, you won’t get very far before the name of Saul Bass comes into the conversation. Bass’ poster designs were among the first to introduce a modern art sensibility into movie posters. His posters didn’t always rely on a photo or painting of the star to tell the story.
The Bunny Lake poster to the right is a great example of how Bass worked. The image of a child torn from a piece of construction paper is frightening. Like the lives of the characters in the film, that construction paper is incomplete without its missing part. There is a child-shaped hole in the paper and a child-shaped hole in the lives of those affected by her disappearance.
