The KX100 Bonneville Assault

I've been rattling around for most of my life looking for one thing or another to race but lets face it, at 60 years old my options are rather limited... In comes Marsha, hence forth and here after affectionately known as "The Misses"... Marsha also wants to race, race a motorcycle...

She had, I say had because I think I talked her out of this little idea,,, anyway, she had her heart set on an illustrious career as a motocross racer... Colorado's first and only one leg female motocross racer... I really had my doubts about this so I set off to pursued her to do something else, something like Bonneville racing where she would be at an advantage instead if a disadvantage by virtue of the fact that she A) only has one real leg (and a fake leg too) and B) that she only tips the scales at a scant 79 pounds soaking wet!!!

Together we watched the movie about Burt Munro, "The Worlds Fastest Indian" and some of Burt's Bonneville adventures... Towards the end of the movie I told the misses that she could do that type of racing and go just as fast if not faster than any one else on the planet,,, in her chosen class of course... Her reply was a hearty "Go get me a bike to race" and that's where the little guy KX100 come into the picture...

At first I was looking for a 50cc bike for her to ride remembering her 79 pound weight but soon gave up on that idea after finding that any 50cc go fast bike worthy of a Bonneville speed record would be well out of my price range <sigh> I bumped up to the 100cc class and thought that a KX100 would suit the bill... The little guy KX is cheap and it really is a real race bike with real race pieces parts and not just some warmed over, reworked street edition of years gone by...

I haven't a clue as to what it'll take to break the 100 MPH barrier on a 100cc bike but I do know that my old YZ400 would top the 100 MPH mark any time I left the throttle open long enough so the little KX at 1/4 of the YZ's size should easily break 25 MPH, right??? It's a place to start I suppose...

So for our first Bonneville trip I'm really not doing too much to the bike or the misses... We'll do a little testing at the local drag strip and try to make a good enough guess as to what gearing will get us up to a reasonable speed and still not throw the poor little KX engine into a thermal melt down situation...

I'll be posting modifications I've made to the little KX as they happen along with what all this is setting me back along the way...

So far we have $3550 for a '07 model year Kawasaki KX100 MX bike which may very well end up becoming my new trail bike should it turn out to be a Bonneville bust <sigh>

More to come,,,
The Perk....

Stay tuned for Perry’s updates and blogs as he and his tiny rider take on the salt flats...
