“Nadeen” is an International Cities of Refuge Writer Norway. In her homeland Iraq, she was persecuted for her journalism and poetry. Nadeen’s work has addressed issues such as women’s rights.
When Nadeen refused to keep silent or to wear the hijab, she received threats, and attempts were made on her life. Several of her family members were injured by her persecutors.
Although living in safety in Norway, Nadeen continues to use a pen name so as not to further endanger her family. We hope that very soon this young poet will be able to take credit for her work. However, for the moment, she feels the acknowledgement of the poems is of far more importance than the acknowledgement of the poet.
Her provisional English translations follow the original Arabic.
