Games to Play with Sight Words

Treasure Hunt: Make 8 small post-it that says “Treasure” on them.  When your child is not looking, stick them on the blank side of 8 sight word cards.   Get at least 10 more cards.  Lay all 18 sight words cards all face up so you can see the words (You should not be able to see the post-its). The first player reads a word and flips over the card.  If s/he finds a treasure sticker, s/he keeps it the sticker.  The next player reads a word and flips over a card.  Continue playing and see who gets the most “Treasure” stickers.  This person is the winner.

Play War:  Make a stack of flash cards face down.  One player takes a card and reads it.  The next player takes their card and reads it.  Count the number of letters in each word.  Whoever has the most number of letters in their word wins both cards.  If both cards have the same number of letters (which is common with sight words), than lay both cards down so you can still see them.  Each player takes the next cards and tries again.  Whoever wins the next round will get to take both cards that were placed up.  (This is an adapted version that we still get in lots of reading practice).  Play until all of the cards are gone.

Roadblock: Take a single set of flashword cards and make a road with them face up.  Go from most practiced words to newer words.  Have your child start at the beginning and read each word.  If your child gets stuck at a word, say “Roadblock”.  Practice the new word and start again on the road.  Your child gets 3 chances to beat the roadblock.  Play again the next day and see if your child can remember the new word.

Crash:  Make 3 extra cards with the word “Crash!” on each card.  Take 30 different sight words and mix the Crash cards with the pile of sight word cards.  Put all of the cards in a bag so that you cannot see them.  Set a timer (this is important to the game).  The first player takes a card out of the bag and reads it.  Keep the card.  The next player takes a card and reads it.  Keep the card. (You can help each other read if you don’t know the word).  Take turns pulling cards.   When a player gets Crash!, s/he must put all of his/her cards back in the bag.  This means one player still has lots of cards.  But the game isn’t over if the timer is still going.  Continue playing.  In this game, someone can actually lose their cards over and over and still be the winner.  When the timer goes off, count the cards and see whazo has the most.

Tic Tac Toe:  Pick out 9 sight word cards.  Draw a Tic Tac Toe frame on paper.  Put each of the 9 cards in a spot on the Tic Tac Toe board.  Use 2 different kinds markers (Cheerios, paper clips, crayons, pennies, nickels, etc.). One player has one matching set of markers (such as pennies) and the other play uses a different set of markers (such as nickels).  The first player must read the word card and put his marker down on top of the word.  The other player continues the game using his different marker.  Play the game of Tic Tac Toe (3 in a row) by reading the words.  Play the game several times using new word cards.

Download two sets of sight word sheets from the class website for the next games.

Go Fish:  Play the classic card game of Go Fish with your sight words.

Memory:  Pick 7 matching sets of sight word cards.  Turn them face down in rows.  The first player turns over two cards.  If they match, s/he can keep them and try again.  If they don’t match, flip them back over and the next player tries to find a match.  Make sure to read the words as you flip them over!
