Artist Residency Overview

A preliminary consultation with coordinating faculty and administration establishes key areas of interest for residency workshops, performances, convocations, and other events.

Activities are designed to integrate within existing curricula and class schedules while stimulating new musical and artistic directions.
On the basis of these projected activities, the residency’s scope, length, timeframe, artist fees, travel and lodging expenses are determined.

A Hosting Site's efforts to expand a residency to other local institutions helps reduce artist fees and related expenses through cost-sharing and other added service incentives.

Boukas comments:

"This Brazilian repertoire performed by the ensemble is among the most challenging a student or consummate professional will encounter. The players know that we are presenting most of this music for the first time in North America and thus have a serious responsibility to uphold.

As they will be the artists and educators of the future, it is my duty to equip them with the accurate musical information and interpretive sensibilities that will allow this music to achieve a global awareness without losing its essential character."

Special Consultations with faculty and administration are available as part of an artist residency addressing issues including:

curriculum design, diversification, and synergy between academic sectors
cross and multi-disciplinary strategies for creating bridges between different musical styles and nomenclatures
committee governance & planning to galvanize adjunct faculty participation
pedagogy workshops and forums
music industry & technology applications
teaching in a multicultural setting

Richard's longtime dedication to promoting Brazilian music has manifested in numerous artistic and music industry activities- as a performer, composer, educator, author, print and video journalist.

His extensive research, authoritative transcriptions of unpublished repertoire and access to repertoire of many of Brazil's top composers led to his forming the New School Brazilian Jazz Ensemble in 1995.

The group has given U.S. and N.Y. premières to more than one hundred works by top Brazilian composers Hermeto Pascoal, Jovino Santos Neto, Guinga, Teco Cardoso, Léa Freire, Mané Silveira and others.
