– a year of FIRSTS
By Walt Reichert
The 2009 Kentuckiana Poultry Club Show held at the Shelby County Fairgrounds May 16 was a great success. We had a number of FIRSTS this year.
For the FIRST time in recent memory, the show topped 900 birds. A total of 933 were entered.
Perhaps for the FIRST time ever, the show had a turkey, make that three turkeys – and a goose. A goose! Two turkeys were entered in the junior show and one in the open; the goose was entered in the open show.
For the FIRST time in years, large fowl topped 100 birds, with a total of 150 entered. A large fowl won the junior show, a Light Brahma by Trevor Blish.
Usually the featherleg bantam class is light at the show, but for the FIRST time in recent memory it was second only to the Old English class with 143 entries.
For the FIRST time ever, money given away by the club topped $1,000. Almost $1,200 in premiums were handed out, thanks to fundraising efforts by the Bennett family.
We should have known it was going to be a good show when storms that rumbled through the area left a horizon-to-horizon rainbow in the sky Friday evening.
The show results are now posted. We hope you look them over, enjoy the pictures from the show and make plans to come to Shelbyville next year. It will be the 65th anniversary of our club’s show. And as always, on the third Saturday in May.
Thanks for viewing, and if you were an exhibitor, thanks for showing with us.
