2010 Tailgate in Tuscaloosa
Jerry Shaw, just back from scouting Alabama against Arkansas with George Friedrich and Al Dart, told us that his DU brother Friedrich has put a deposit down for a SJS Rat Line tailgate space in the ’Bama Quad next Labor Day. San Jose State will be the first team to play in their expanded Bryant-Denny Stadium. As soon as Shaw gets his throw-away camera pictures on a disk, we’ll publish his photos from their trip into the South on this site. Circle the date!
Claire Appledoorn dies
We received word the last week in August that Claire Appledoorn lost his battle with malignant melanoma.
Both Appledoorn and his retired Shasta College coach and Spartan teammate Leon Donohue were hospitalized in Redding. Both were battling forms of cancer. Clar’s photo is on our blog, along with a photo from his services. His obituary is linked from the Rat Line message board.

Pat Lovell, line mate of John Madden at Cal Poly and brother-in-law to Spartan Hall of Fame tackle Leon Donohue emailed that the former Cowboy attended the funeral even though he is undergoing chemo. (See message board for details on Leon and his teammate Claire Appledoorn’s cancer history.)

We recently lost their well conditioned Spartan Hall of Fame, NFL player and eight year coach Bob Titchenal (1957-1964) on Sunday, July 5th in Santa Rosa. Bob had been fighting dementia, but was still swimming when vacationing in Hawai'i. See a letter from his wife Barbara on our message board. He is survived by his wife and three sons. Bob Titchenal was 91
SAE Tackle Jodie and Jo Gibbons’ son Jake “Jay”, 38, who played football for Cal was lost in Arctic ice for 3-days outside of Summit, Greenland but has survived. He was just fitted with new legs in August. then 10 days later went surfing with fellow amputees in Pismo Beach! (See Blog)
