Some items are extremely......

hard to find in Kosovo.  Take contact lense solution.  Not a bottle to be found in the pharmacies in Gjilan.  Finally found it in the capital city of Prishtina for a mere 12 euro.  Convert that to US $$ and the price comes out to $18.88 per bottle.  With all the dirt and dust we have here I guess that it makes sense that few people wear contacts, hence the lack of supply of solution.
It probably also makes sense that the dirt and dust are the reason for all the washing of clothes that Kosovor women do [I swear the landlady has clothes in her machine 20 out of the 24 hours in each day].  Coupled with the running of her vacuum the other 6 hours each day I am starting to get a better picture of why there is a shortage of electricity here.
Something that is NOT in short supply around here is of all things, fabric softner.  At our local grocery store it comes in no less than 3 sizes and 24 different “flavors” .  Want “spring blossom”, “winter wonderland”, “summer breeze”, no problem.  For the truly adventurous there are:  “Marine”-for the boater in you-never mind that Kosovo is land locked, “Fudge” or “Chocolate-vanilla” for the ice cream buff, [I’d be afraid of dogs following me around wanting to lick my pant leg] “Calming” for that stressed out person in your life.  [I have been thinking about adding this to my landladies wash as it would be cheaper and easier than trying to slip a valium into her daily chai].  Other flavors, to name but few, include “romantic”, “aphrodisiac”,  and “relaxation”.
“What’s that”, “what’s in our wash you ask”?  This months flavor is.....”Tropical breeze”.  [I have always thought it would be fun to spend a couple years on an island].
“What’s next?”  Well, the landlady has been telling Lisa that 40 is a great age to start having children and more than once I have caught her with her hands on a bottle of “aphrodisiac” looking to slip it in the cart behind the milk.   Hmmm....
