Damon Smith Wild Australasia

Damon has spent his life traveling to remote and often dangerous regions of the world, but in Australia Damon is probably better known for his documentary film work on adventure and wildlife productions - such as Channel 7’s The World Around Us, and the BBc’s Wild Australasia natural history series. Damon was also the film-maker behind the scenes in The Great Aussie Balloon Race, when Dick Smith made his historic non-stop hot-air balloon flight across Australia.
As a pilot and wildlife documentary maker, Damon’s filming projects have taken him to the wildest and most remote parts of Australia. His passion and resolve to record and share the finest images possible, no matter how challenging the location or the weather, have resulted in movies and photographs that have captured the raw beauty of the scene with amazing clarity. The Australian Film Commission, describing his series shot on far North Australia, writes, ‘Exquisitely filmed and edited, Across the Gulf features the stunning beauty of the vast Australian landscape.’ Damon was also there to record the tale for A Wilderness Love Story, when Australian Geographic wanted to find out how a young couple might cope with a year in the wilderness of Tasmania.
These days Damon’s passion lies in his quest for the perfect photograph. With his large format and panoramic cameras, from the air and from the ground, his artist’s eye has framed powerful scenes from expansive, red deserts to frolicking seal pups. See the splendour of Australia through Damon’s eyes.
This exhibition is a must to see.

Many of Damon’s stunning panoramic images are captured as a result of weeks of traveling and perseverance. Great patience is required to find the perfect location and then to wait for the ideal combination of light and weather.
This amazing shot is the result of a personal quest and intricate planning. “ For 30 years I’ve been photographing Australia’s wild landscapes from the air. I planned to shoot this remote river just before sunset, when the low angle of the sun would help to give better definition and colour. This meant circling endlessly over my chosen bend of river, shooting through a special window in my plane until I had the picture.”
