Photographs of Things I Have Lost

This project started as a photo based project while at Bard during the summer of 2006. The directional text was written by me, and the action performed in the darkroom. The resulting images were pinned up in the manner shown in the first image, with the documentation and titles on typed pieces of paper as seen in the second image. There was a stool placed near the installation, as a subtle hint to the viewer to consider their loss. The third image shows the installation in the space with the video projection and other works in my presentation at my 2nd year review at Bard.

In order to further investigate this idea, I’ve turned the images into animated gifs so the viewer can experience the actual time in the emotion, rather than viewing it as a static image/non-image. These animations can be seen by clicking here, which will take you to the web installation of all 9 “Lost Things”, as well as provide navigation to view each individually and also a link to return to this page. You may also use the navigation below to visit the pages individually before seeing them as a group.
Photographs of things I have lost.

Step one: Place photographic paper in the enlarger
Step two: Turn on the light
Step three: Meditate on the object that has been lost until sadness is felt
Step four: Turn off enlarger light and note elapsed time
Step five: Process exposed paper

Notation: For the purpose of the experiment, the enlarger will be turned off at 60 seconds, regardless of presence of sadness.
Surprising Discovery: Other emotions in addition to sadness were present, and are noted along with the image details.
