Name: Shiona Turini
   Age: 25
Brief Bio:
Shiona attended Saltus Grammer School and then went on to further her education by attending Hampton University in Virginia. Shiona’s first internship was while she was still in college. It was through the Department of Tourism and she was placed at Lou Hammond & Associates - a Travel PR Agency in New York. Her boss at LH&A introduced Shiona to her sister who worked at Yves Saint Laurent and gave her an amazing reference. “I kept in contact with both of them, and after college I went on to intern for Garine, the PR Manager at YSL. I worked really long hours for free, but it was worth it.” That’s where the fun began! concepts . communicate . creation

1. SS: What is your job title, and how long have you worked in the industry?
Shiona: Right now I'm the Accessories Market Editor at W Magazine, but before that I was the PR Coordinator at Yves Saint Laurent. I was at YSL for about 3 years before I switched (or as some people say - crossed over to the dark side), and have been at W for a year in October. I also started a company in Bermuda - STyle Bermuda - a fashion, lifestyle and entertainment firm specializing in publicity, events, marketing, branding, talent relations and consulting.

2. SS: What does your job entail?
Shiona: I'm responsible for getting all of the shoes, bags and belts for every photo shoot in the magazine. To do that I have to know all the best accessories on the "market" and have relationships with all of the fashion houses so that they can give me what I need when I want it. For each shoot, we meet with the stylist who tells us his/her vision for the story, then I get in the best accessories. Stylists will reference movies, people, periods in time, fashion icons etc. so I have to have a good knowledge of fashion history and iconic moments. For example, if a stylist references 50/60's - I'll see which designers did items that fit or go to vintage stores in the city.

3. SS: When did you become interested in fashion and the fashion industry?
Shiona: Since I was born! I was always really obsessed with watching my mother shop and get dressed, and when I got old enough I started making clothes for myself and my friends. I was also really interested in theatre at one point and I loved how styling could transform a person and make a cast look like they were from a completely different era. I just didn't know how to transform that into a career until I got to college. I started helping to produce the school fashion shows and that's when I realized I could make a career out of a passion.

4. SS: Do you get to travel to such places like Paris, Milan, Venice for your job?
Shiona: Yes - the last trip I took was to Paris for the shows. I thought it would be so glamorous, but when I got there I realized that it was tons and tons of work. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life though.

5. SS: When I say the word “Bermuda” what 3 words come to mind?
Shiona: Salt, sun and sand. It's raining in NY - so the beach is on my mind :)

6. SS: Where does your inspiration come from?
Shiona: You can find inspiration from so many things - other peoples lives, travel, old movies etc. I'm always really inspired by traveling and seeing different cultures. And, the movie Mahogany with Diana Ross is a constant fashion inspiration to me - she was a girl from a small town and wanted to make it big in the fashion industry. The glitz and glamour and costumes are all amazing.

7. SS: What are you currently working on now?
Shiona: We have 4 shoots back to back so it's been really intense at work. We had two shoots this weekend, and our last is this week. The last story is for the October issue with the cruise collections. I can't reveal too much - but there are a lot of colours, prints, and layers. I got to look for really bright, textured accessories which was fun, and it reminded me of the fashion in Bermuda. But I had to work over the weekend while my family was visiting so it wasn't the most ideal situation for me.

8. SS: What do you feel makes a good fashion designer?
Shiona: That's a hard question because there are so many different factors that go into one fashion show, or collection or article of clothing
that you buy in a store. Someone may be a great designer, but have bad styling or bad production so the final product is not as good as it could be. So a good designer has a great team behind them. I would like to say originality - but these days most great fashion is a recreation of something from the archives. One of my favorite designers is Stefano Pilati for Yves Saint Laurent because he takes the history of the house, and makes it into his own creations. It's almost like wearable artwork. But then I also love Balenciaga - the designer there takes risks and I think that's important to stay fresh and new in fashion.

9. SS: Who were your role models while you were growing up?
Shiona: I was fortunate to have many and I'm grateful most were in my family - I didn't have to look far for positive, successful people. My parents and all of the other women in my family. I really looked up to my sister and my older cousins, and I still do. And one of my mentors - Dr. Tuzo - she really taught me an amazing work ethic and how to push myself to the best of my ability. My fashion role model was probably my mom - I always look at pictures of when she was younger - dressing in mini skirts and platforms with this unbelievable confidence.

10. SS: What’s the best thing anyone has done for you?
Shiona: My parents have high standards and expectations and can be a little tough... but they allowed me to be myself and make my own choices. And, my old boss Garine for giving me a chance - my first fashion internship - and helping me throughout my career.

11. SS: What is the greatest and most important thing you have learned from your parents?
Shiona: That no matter what, you start and end with family. No matter how much I love my career and living in New York, I would give it all up for my family. Working in such a superficial industry - you can either get lost in it, or recognize that there are more important things in life. My parents taught me that you put your family first. OH - and to travel a lot. It opens your eyes.
Here lies just some of the many high-end designer items Shiona gets her hands on while working for W Magazine. Final Thought...
SS: For Bermuda’s young men and women interested in the world of fashion and what it takes to become successful, what piece of advice can you give to encourage them to follow their dreams?

Shiona: Step out of your comfort zone, work hard, and be prepared to make sacrifices. It's a really competitive, tough industry, but nothing is impossible if you want it bad enough. You have to take risks and challenge
yourself to make it here. So many people tell me that they're interested in working in fashion - but when they see the starting salaries, or realize that they will be working till 3 am sometimes, they're no longer interested. To work in fashion you really have to start with an internship - if not, you won't get anywhere. Most fashion internships are unpaid and Bermudians do not want to work for free! But, you have to do what you have to do to reach your ultimate goals.
