As the National Association of Teachers and the American Federation of Teachers have implied, NCLB is not a piece of educational reform legislation; it is a trap. It deliberately sets schools up to fail in order to justify privatizing them after 2014. If the draconian, neoliberal/neoconservative vision of the Right becomes a reality, teachers will no longer be able to conceptualize themselves as public servants whose work contributes to some important public purpose vital to expanding our nation’s democratic promise.
