Inspiring Science Achievement through Transformative Astronomy Education
Project Epiphany
Project Epiphany is an out-of-school time (OST) initiative that seeks to democratize astronomy, inspire science achievement, and provide powerful
science learning experiences for urban elementary and middle-school students.
Underinvestment in science education, along with scarce community resources and increasingly light-polluted skies, have made the wonders of the sky off limits for children growing up in high-poverty, urban communities. Project Epiphany will inspire future astronomers and promote transformative science learning through authentic, hands-on activities and unique astronomy field experiences. An innovative collaboration among local after-school programs, science educators, and astronomers will equip elementary and middle-school students with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to research and explore lunar, solar, planetary, and deep space phenomena that are truly out of this world.
“ My cosmic discoveries, although old news for society, were as fresh for me in the Bronx, New York, as they must have been for Galileo in Florence, Italy, four centuries ago. Not only that, Galileo’s ‘observatory’ was his rooftop and his windowsill. So was mine. These episodes of enlightenment, and others to follow, all occurred outside of formal educational structures and programming - they happened outside the classroom…”
~ Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Astrophysicist
from his memoir, The Sky is Not The Limit
Breaking News: We did it! Project Epiphany has been named the winner of Ideablob’s June contest. We look forward to putting the $10,000 award to work to help Atlanta kids explore the universe. A million thanks to everyone who voted! We couldn’t have done it without you!
