“Bread and Circuses” or “Loaves and Fishes”?
Wednesday, February 27, 2008

Have you ever heard the expression “bread a circuses”?

It’s funny how you can hear an expression like that over the years, and never bother to find out what it means or where it comes from. But over the last couple of weeks, I’ve heard this one several times, which I thought was unusual.

So, I decided to look into it.

According to Wikipedia (which I recommend you always double-check and never use for academic reference), “This phrase originates in Satire X of the Roman poet Juvenal of the

There’s a Lot of Work To Be Done
Sunday, February 10, 2008

I’m not a big fan of NPR (although I’ve been on a few times), but on Friday they played a piece about something that I’ve heard the “secular” media mention before: former Arkansas Governor (and presidential candidate) Mike Huckabee’s frequent use of biblical allusions in his speeches.

In this piece, though, NPR took a different tack: they went to the National Mall (in front of the Capitol in D.C.) and interviewed tourists from across the nation, asking them if they understood some of the

A Little Post-Super-Tuesday Fun
Wednesday, February 6, 2008

Well, Super-Duper Tuesday has come and gone, and the results can be pretty depressing: McCain toe RINO won 9 states, Romney the Liar won 7 states, and Huckabee the Christian Socialist won 5 states. That brings the delegate totals to 613 for McCain, 269 for Romney, and 190 for Huckabee. Oh, and 14 for Ron Paul.

(Alan Keyes got 14,102 votes across the states where he was on the ballot.)

So to cheer myself up (and maybe you too), I stumbled across this great little blog from the Baltimore Sun

Super-Duper Tuesday - What Choice Do We Have?
Monday, February 4, 2008

Well, the Super Bowl was yesterday... but Super Tuesday is tomorrow.

As conservative Christians, do we really have a choice?

You probably already know that I’m voting for Alan Keyes, since he’s on the ballot here in Georgia. I thought what he had to say about the other remaining candidates in a recent interview pretty much summed things up:

None of the candidates offered in this election cycle represent the consistent, principled and coherent conservatism that drew many people to the

“SelectSmart” - Who is YOUR Candidate?
Friday, January 25, 2008

This is one of the most interesting online political surveys I’ve seen:

Twenty-six questions. It looks like every presidential candidate is included. Guess who it turns out I support?

 1. Theoretical Ideal Candidate  (100 %)
 2.  Alan Keyes  (87 %)
 3.  Tom Tancredo (withdrawn, endorsed Romney)  (84 %)
 4.  Stephen Colbert (campaign halted)  (82 %)
 5.  Duncan Hunter (withdrawn)  (81 %)
 6.  Mitt Romney  (72 %)
 7.  Chuck Hagel (not

Righteous Anger
Saturday, January 19, 2008

OK, so I’m watching the game on TV tonight. No, not that game; in my house, where sports is never discussed and ESPN is never watched (“not that there’s anything wrong with that”), it’s well understood that “the sport” is politics and “the game” is any primary, runoff, or general election (late-night votes and filibusters on C-SPAN count too). “The Superbowl” is, of course, the Presidential election. “Break out the popcorn and the cream soda, boys! It’s gonna be a long night!”

All of this is

Ron Paul: The “Anti-Huckabee”?
Friday, January 18, 2008

I was having a discussion this week with my radio show guest, Michael Miller, Director of Education at the Acton Institute, about the economic views and policies of the Republican candidates for president. (It was fairly easy to dismiss all of the Democrat candidates’ views on economics: “socialism.”) During the conversation, I stumbled upon a description of Ron Paul that I hadn’t thought of before: the “anti-Huckabee.”

What do I mean? Well, we know that Ron Paul is a “little l” libertarian.

Mike Huckabee: “Christian Socialist?”
Friday, January 4, 2008

Well, the “race” for U.S. president has officially started, with the Iowa caucuses taking place yesterday. I say “race” because that’s what it’s become in the eyes of the mainstream media (and, therefore, in the eyes of most Americans): a horse race, with regular updates on “who’s out front” and “who’s coming up fast” and “who’s dropping out,” etc.

I’ve also heard this election described as the “American Idol” of politics: just phone in your vote now for your favorite candidate!

The Lesser of Two Evils
Thursday, December 13, 2007

I can’t believe it’s been, like, ten months (!) since I posted anything here. I have lots of excuses (such as running for Congress - and no, I didn’t win), but I intend to skip them and dive right back in (including getting back to my book). Here’s the query that drove me back here again:

Should Christians vote for the “lesser of two evils”?

I had an interesting (to me, at least) conversation on my radio show this week with Michael Cromartie, a Christian political analyst and the VP of the

Selling Our Birthright?
Friday, February 2, 2007

My friend Andrea Lafferty, at the Traditional Values Coalition, sounded a dire warning about the growing successes of the “Christian Left” in selling their unbiblical policy platforms -- what Dr. Gary North once called “baptized socialism” -- to gullible American Christians:
