We were in Bhutan at the invitation of the Queen Mother, Her Majesty Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck. We were delighted when notice came that she wanted to meet with us. Kutira graciously loaned Robin and Prema her own kiras so that they all could be presented in the traditional dress of Bhutan.
We Meet the Queen Mother
Ringzin arranged for these two young women to help us dress. Kutira looked quite wonderful in her turquoise kira.
Robin enjoyed wearing a kira.
We were escorted into the palace through two armed guards.
This fellow was quite the diplomat and entertained us while we awaited the Queen.
She was beautiful, gracious and charming. She made us feel right at home.
She chatted with Kutira for awhile
She was so happy to meet Kutira’s husband, Raphael. He looked quite snappy in a tie and jacket.
Robin shared some heartfelt observations with Her Majesty.
She spoke eloquently about the nuns and her aspirations to help them. We all brought her gifts she was delighted to receive.
Her connection to the dharma was profound. Prema gave her a pair of Tara Tam earrings and she put them on immediately.
A few days later we each received a package from Her Majesty.

After visiting the Queen Mother we went to the Amankora, one of the most exclusive hotels in Bhutan. Ian, the manager received us warmly.
A friend of Kutira, he is interested in helping to support the nuns of Bhutan and offered to host the Tara Dance when we visit the country with our dancers.
While Kutira and Prema chatted with Ian Robin and Dorje went exploring.

Dorje was excited to learn how to operate the camera

They took a little tour of the hotel store

These weavings are the real treasure of Bhutan. Intricately hand woven, many of the pieces take a year to complete
Ashi Dorje Wangchuck has established a foundation, Tarayana. One of it’s goals is to help the weavers to find outlets for their work.

Before we left Thimpu Kutira visited the Her Majesty Ashi Dorje Wangchuck. There are four queens, all sisters.
Mae Chee had sent this statue with Kutira to give to Ashi Dorje as a gift. She was delighted.
