Our first order of business was to go to the National Library. We were to meet Gyonpo, the director, who helps manage the Zilukha Nunnery.
The National Library
The library is an imposing structure. Buildings in Bhutan are beautifully adorned with traditional designs, carved into the wood and painted
Water can be scarce in Paro for most of the year, but this garden was flourishing
Gyonpo, the Chief Researcher of the library was exceedingly generous with us. He took us on a tour of the facility and spent countless hours with us at the nunnery.
The library is putting their collection of sacred Buddhist texts on microfilm, and also sponsoring this craftsman to carve the traditional wood blocks that used to be the sole method of printing
We climbed some steep stairs, this side panel is retained by remarkable brass work
Below us we spotted the government offices. We would have our audience with the queen in this building.
