Our purpose is to publish quality artwork and to give artists and creative writers encouragement to achieve their goals. A large percentage of our sales from publications is donated to community nonprofit organizations. This allows us to support our community and for our community to support our creative works.

We Are A Movement

Our cause is to support, educate and encourage independent creativity. We are happy to share our experience with others who have the courage of their convictions and wish to publish their work. We do not accept manuscripts but will assist you in accomplishing your goals.

In The Beginning

Spruce Head Island Press was created when Betty N. Thomas realized that she was not only a poet but also an artist. The poems were so vivid that Betty realized that only she could create the images to illustrate her own poems. To allow another publisher or illustrator to complete her work would be giving away her creativity and cutting a huge hole into who she is as an artist. She also realized that with the blatant commercialism of today’s publishing industry the only way her work would remain unaltered was to publish it herself. You could say that Purple Hats and Pink Tutus gave birth to Spruce Head Island Press.
