Baby purple artichokes from the shuq. In the states, this is a speciality item that can sometimes be found in a gourmet grocery and is super expensive. At the market around the corner, it cost less than a dollar for a big bag of them.
Speaking of food, which I should be, because it is Friday, which means that Shabbat is coming, which means that delicious food is on its way... I have tried lots of new foods since I’ve been here.
This morning I joined Donnie and David on their Friday morning jahnun breakfast in the shuq. They did this one of the first weekends that they moved to Tel Aviv, and they have been going every Friday morning since then. Jahnun is a Yemenite dish- its this rolled up bread that has been cooked overnight, served with tomatoes, schug (chile sauce), and a hard boiled egg. It is super spicy and delicious. The schug is on the side, so you can make is as hot or mild as you like. I put two little spoons of schug and my mouth was on fire. David put quadruple what I had, and barely noticed the spice. The boy can take take the heat. I was impressed.
