Beginnings

When filmmakers get bored, bad things happen.  With the majority of Ponderous’ actors miles away in other cities, no money to make a movie and a tub full of Legos, Brett Mauser had a brilliant idea spawned by utter boredom.  Make a movie with the Legos!  But that stop motion crap took too long!  There had to be ab easier way!

Using “plate animation” that Brett, Bradley and DeMarcus utilized several times while making commercials at a Corpus Christi Television station, Brett set forth to make War Dawgz.  A ten minute short about a space squadron fighting an evil invading force.

Why Space?

With actors spread out all over the country, James inNorth Carolina, Tye in Connecticut, and others all over Texas, Brett had to capture the voices via the telephone.  So calling the actors, having them read their lines individually whenever they were available, Brett utilized the tinniness of the phone connection to his advantage.  Making most of the characters speak through their wireless head sets, allowed Brett to get away with the crappy audio quality.

Tid Bits

  1. Look for a cameo from Ponderous mascot Bogey in

  2. Scott Neth scored the Pilot Episode of War Dawgz

  3. Asides from Bradley, Amanda and Brett, all of the voices were captured via telephone

  4. War Dawgz uses “plate” animation instead of the traditional stop motion, “because it sucks doing it the other way,” says Brett Mauser

  5. The DVD version of War Dawgz includes bloopers and outtakes as well as director’s commentary

  6. The original names of the episodes were, “The Wormhole Gambit (Pilot),” “Wrath of the Matriarch (Episode 2),” and “The Dawgz of War (Episode 3).”
