A 1984-survey carried out by the Centre d’Animation en Langues among one thousand young people revealed that less than 2% of them understood the meaning of “Love of the common people”. The song, by Paul Young, was a chart topper at the time. Everyone could translate the title, the majority could hum the first few lines, but hardly anyone could get the general meaning. The Plan-Langues arose from this revelation.

Jean-Pierre Gailliez, who founded the Centre d’Animation en Langues, secured the collaboration of Radio 21 and the newspaper Le Soir in order to carry out a project supposed to last just a few months… 23 years later, the Centre d’Animation en Langues has already produced over 1000 Plan-Langues and has encountered hundreds of artists!

Long live the Plan-Langues!

En 1984, un sondage réalisé par le Centre d’Animation en Langues sur un millier de jeunes révèle que moins de 2% d’entre eux comprennent le sens de la chanson «Love of the common people» de Paul Young, énorme succès à cette époque. Tous peuvent en traduire le titre, plus de la moitié peuvent en fredonner les premières paroles, mais pratiquement aucun ne peut en saisir le sens global. De cette révélation naît le Plan-Langues.

Jean-Pierre Gailliez, fondateur du Centre d’Animation en Langues, va s’assurer la collaboration de Radio 21 et du journal Le Soir pour un projet qui ne devait durer que quelques mois… 23 ans plus tard, le Centre d’Animation en Langues a déjà réalisé plus de 1000 Plan-Langues et rencontré des centaines d’artistes!
