It’s an early spring morning and eighty-eight year old Pearline White steps onto the porch to collect the newspaper only to find that it has been arbitrarily tossed in the yard.  To secure it she enlists the help of her young neighbor Billy who is new to Nashville and to the neighborhood.  Through commonsensical wit, a razor-sharp memory and brutal honesty, Ms. Pearline takes him on a historical journey, recounting triumphs and tragedies of Black life in Nashville, Tennessee during the 40s, 50s, and turbulent 60s to current times.  Eugenia J. Sweeney stars in this one-woman original show.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 5-13, 2009 Rhubarb Theater Company presents “What” an original play by Nashvillian Trish Crist at The Darkhorse Theater. “What” opens Friday June 5 and runs through Saturday June 13. Wednesday-Saturday shows are at 7:30pm and the Sunday June 7 matinee is at 2:30pm. Performances are at The Darkhorse Theater, 4610 Charlotte Avenue. All tickets are $12. Reservations and information at (615) 397-7820 or rhubarbnashville@gmail.com.

“What” is a series of 20 short vignettes exploring what we fear, what shames us, what gives us joy, what we want, what we deny, and what we are. The cast of five is made up four veteran performers known well on Nashville stages (Chris Basso, Jack E. Chambers, Trish Crist, and Megan Murphy) and one wry and very talented newcomer Dave Shetler. Each cast member directs 4 vignettes, making “What” an intensely collaborative ensemble approach to production.

Seinfeld-like in setting, “What” depicts the actors in various combinations, pairs, and monologues throughout the production, all in a generic but comfortable apartment setting. Core aspects of the human condition—desire, death, aspirations, values, family—are examined through humor and drama alike.

“What” contains adult language and is intended for mature audiences.

Rhubarb Theater Company was created by Julie Alexander in 2003. With Julie's move to Newcastle England, new Artistic Director Trish Crist maintains Rhubarb's focus on tolerance and diversity in slice-of-life situations. Past productions include “Birds in Church”, “ The Normal Heart”, “My Secret Weapon”, “Blue Window” and “Last Chance Texaco/First & Second Timothy.”

“A Way Out”

Press Release

Contact: Shawn Whitsell

Remounting of original play, 'A Way Out' to benefit the  Shades of Black Theatre Festival The organizers of the Shades of Black Theatre Festival, which includes representatives from SistaStyle Productions, Dream 7 Theatre Productions and the Destiny Theatre Experience, will remount a production of  "A Way Out" on Friday, June 26th at the Darkorse Theater as a fundraiser of this year's upcoming festival.

Directed by Shawn Whitsell, and written by Jené India, "A Way Out" depicts the relationship between four close friends, two whose marriages are falling apart from abuse. Together, these friends experience the ups and downs of friendship, marriage and dating.

"I wanted to write a piece about a real issue affecting relationships today. Infidelity isn't the only thing that poses a threat to marriages and relationships. More people than we think are in, or have been in an abusive relationship at some point. More attention needs to be brought to this problem," says Jené, who is also a member of the ensemble cast. "The subject matter is heavy, but the play also has many comedic moments. The audience will definitely experience a wide range of emotions from laughter, to anger and maybe even rage."

Jené says that though the story is fictional, she was still able to draw from real life. "Although I have not experienced domestic abuse personally, I have spoken with many people who have and still are going through it. I was able to capture some of their experiences into the show along with some of my personal experiences," she says of her writing. "Putting these elements together into a show creates an informative, eye opening, yet enjoyable piece. I don't want my audience leaving my show feeling heavier than they came."

The cast played to sold out audiences in March which, according to Whitsell, is one of the reasons they chose to bring it back. "Though we dealt with a very sensitive issue, the play isn't so heavy that audience members leave emotionally drained. There is plenty of humor and light-heartedness in the play as well so there's a nice even balance.

"I think that's one of the reasons audiences gravitated toward it. It's informative, yet entertaining. It's dramatic, yet comedic," says Whitsell, who also plays the role of Nathan. "It's real life."

In addition to Jené India and Whitsell, "A Way Out" features performances by Mary McCallum, Fiona Soul, Latrisha Talley, René Marcus, Giada Wren, Renard Hirsch, Jimmie Hill, Rashad Rayford, Cortez Lee and Tyese Hunter.

The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $15. All proceeds will benefit the Shades of Black Theatre Festival. The Darkhorse Theater is located at 4610 Charlotte Ave., Nashville, TN 37209. For reservations or additional information, call (615) 781-3904.
