Beginning of june, time for a new crusade ! Michelle promised a new one for tuesday, so before I left home for school, I quickly took a sneak peak... Curiousity killed the cat, but as I’m no cat...
Yes ! The crusade is “ easy” and just a simple idea ( who hasn’t done rubbings when he /she was a kid ?) but with so much possibilities.
Because my idea for the autumnquilt ,making a papercast for the 8 participants, took so much time to dry, the crusade was a possible solution.
Yesterday my mother-in-law gave me her contribution for the quilt and her autumnbackground ( coloring with ecoline ) and the wax rubbings were a perfect match !
Some weeks ago I bought the grungeboardletters from Jim Holtz.

They are great stuff but quite expensive here in Belgium ( 30 €/ 47$...) so I’m trying to use them sparingly: using them for special occasions only, as a template to draw around or as the structure for my papercast,...
For this crusade I layed the word HERFST ( autumn) in different characters and sticked them with doublesided tape on a plank.

I put a paper on it and rubbed above the letters with waxcrayons

After rubbing I painted it with ecoline ( liquid watercolor) :

I just scribbled with my brush here and there with the different colors while they were still wet, so they blended on some places.

When I was satisfied with the colors I rubbed slightly with a babywipe over the waxletters so I could wipe away the excess of watercolor.
Hmmm, I ended with colorful orange fingers ( even this morning my thumb still looked orange...)

I tried several papers and several crayons with different results.

This crayon worked quite well : there was a good resistance and you can even see the swirls of the grungeboard. I first put dots with the ecoline, but because it sank right away in the paper, it didn’t blend with the other colors, so that was not good.

a different paper, a bit thicker, but I had to rub harder so there was also crayon next to the letteres and that also resisted the watercolor....That doesn’t look good, too messy...

great crayons for resistance ( oil pastels) but you can’t read the
letters anymore...
So after a while I found the crayons and paper that worked and I made several banners.
This is a small peak of one...

Curious what I made with my wasrubbings and you are not a cat ?
Just read my next blog....

crusade n° 21 : wax rubbings...
