Artemis Fowl is the first book in a series about a teenage criminal mastermind. In this first book he kidnaps a fairy, and holds her for ransom to get a pot of gold. That angers the other fairies, and they become enemies. But he later needs their help. The series is full of twists and turns, and has kept me endlessly amused.
