Middens are piles of debris that indicate a favorite eating site.  In this case the squirrel removes the scales one by one from the pine cone to eat the seed attached to each scale.  The central stem of the cone is stripped and the scales are left to tell the story that this is a popular eating spot.  Middens can grow to be incredibly large and are a sure sign of a place that is visited repeatedly to enjoy good snacks.
