Saracens!

I have finished painting the first unit of Saracen infantry.  I’ve posted a couple of photographs here.

The figures, as I think I’ve said before, are from Musketeer Miniatures, and the shield transfers and banner are from Little Big Men Studios.

The painting is very much the same as for the Templars - except that they’re a lot more colourful than the Templars, and because there’s a lot less white, I used my usual Army Painter ‘Strong Tone’ Quick Shade, instead of the ‘Soft Tone’ I used on the Templars.

The flesh was painted with Foundry F55B ‘Butter Fudge’.  It seems to work quite well for Arabic flesh, once it’s got the Strong Tone over it.

I’m still not sure about this project - I’m quite enjoying it, but it’s not a patch on painting Romans!  I certainly shan’t be buying any ‘army deals’ in case I lose interest before I’ve finished - I’ll just buy a unit at a time, and paint them up before getting any more.  I’m expecting some Roman dromedarii from Warlord Games any day now, so further ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ stuff will have to wait.

One thing this project has shown me is a good, quick, way to do ‘desert’ bases - which will stand me in good stead for the dromedarii.  Who knows, once the dromedarii are painted, I may well do a few more Romans on sandy bases.  I hope Warlord make some figures for the Middle East - Judeans, Parthians, etc, would be rather nice.  Now that they’re going to be doing dromedarii, I don’t see how they can avoid doing at least some suitable opposition for them.  Some skirmish games, perhaps based around Macro and Cato’s exploits in Simon Scarrow’s ‘Eagles in the Sand’, sounds like fun!

Saracens!
