Freshman Biology

Introduction

Thank you for logging on to my website. The freshman biology course has both the Regular and Honors component, so link yourself to the one which applies to your needs as you seek information from this site. Throughout the year I will post notes and photos of the experiences students have in class, along with assignments and special deadlines. Students enrolled in these classes will learn biology in a myriad of ways: art, song, play-acting, active reading, model building, lectures, experiments, dissections, film/animations, research papers, field studies, peer review, and comprehensive final exams given at the close of each term.

This one year class is divided into three threads of study: Fall term is a survey of ecology and plants, including a collection of the local plants, and a research paper on field work done by the honors students; Winter term involves atomic structure, enzyme activity, biochemistry (photosynthesis, cellular respiration, DNA replication, protein synthesis) a paper on DNA for the Honors students, and a survey of Mendelian Genetics; Spring term involves a study of several Animal phyla, with numerous dissections to investigate the evolution of key organ systems. Students in the Honors section will fabricate a working model that answers a question about biology.                           “Good Morning Class!”    Mr. Hayes
