Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s in The Bronx River projects and being the youngest of four gave me more than I could ever hope for musically. My mother raised us. My musical talent came from my father and my brother. My father lived across town with his girlfriend. He would sing to me when I got the chance to see him. Nate King Cole sound. Real smooth. I got my good sense, hard work and discipline from my mother.
My brother listened to every style of music there was. From Motown to Rock. I heard The Chambers Brothers and Baby Huey and The Baby Sitters. (Google it) Jimmy McGriff, Al Green and Gloria Lynne. Billy Vera and Little Richard. My ears got the kind of training that musicians wish for. The 60’s, 70’s and 80’s was the best time for music and me. I learned pocket from a blind drummer who lived in Bronx River named Ricky Williams. He killed on drums and was even better on organ.

I caught Doo Wop, Rock and Roll, Jazz, Soul, R & B, Broadway, Pop, Rock, Fusion, Disco, Contemporary Jazz, Punk, Funk and Hip Hop. I applied all of those styles to the drums and it’s worked for me for 30 years. When I teach, the first thing I teach is how to listen and pay attention to what’s going on inside the music. Be a part of the groove. Play inside the groove. And, always study, learn to read music and work hard.

“The only place that success comes before sweat is in the dictionary.”
