Tom MacNiven

Tom MacNiven is a Professional Trumpet Player based in Glasgow, Scotland.

His career began playing mostly Jazz and Funk pick up gigs in and around Glasgow and Edinburgh in the early Nineties, and performing extensively with the Fred Quimby Quartet, Tempus Fugit and Brass Street. He then went on to form his own Quintet, playing at Festivals and enjoying a long running residency in the famous McChuill's Bar in Glasgow.

In 1996 he gained a seat in the trumpet section of the newly formed Scottish National Jazz Orchestra directed by Tommy Smith and has been a member ever since. Coming joint second in the Scottish final of the Royal Sun Alliance Young Jazz Musician of the Year competition that year, the next year he won the heat.

Going with the Quartet format for his next project, he recorded his debut album Guess What in 1998 featuring an all star rhythm section of Brian Kellock, Mario Caribe and John Rae with stunning guest performance by Tenor Saxophone giant Bobby Wellins. More recently he has been mostly doing various Jazz gigs, sessions and some touring show work as a dep on shows like Chicago and the European tour of The Rat Pack.

Look out in the near future for another solo album, a new record with Hue and Cry with tour to follow and the recording of a cd with the Paul Towndrow Sextet with a UK tour mid 2007.

Tom’s debut album ‘Guess What?’ was released in April this year and is available from Phat Controller.

The album was recorded in front of a live audience at CAVA Sound workshop in Glasgow.

The immediacy of recording in front of an audience, tempered by the need to get as good a result as possible, has led to that indefinable 'something' that makes a recording special.

Have a listen to one of the tracks from the album and hopefully you’ll enjoy the experience as much as the audience obviously did.
