Folk music has long been a vehicle for political expression, especially in Scotland. In a recent Travelling Folk programme on BBC Radio Scotland, Archie Fisher presented a specially commissioned session inspired by the G8 summit in Perthshire.
Above is an exclusive track of music and poetry that centre around the G8 summit. It's from the never before recorded and perfectly named, Babelfish, who mix relevant and resonant poetry with groovy folk vibes. Remarkably, the poetry is partly improvised.
Babelfish features Jock Urquhart (words), Adam Sutherland (fiddle), Bo Jingham (flute), John Somerville (accordion), Andy Thorburn (keyboards), and Iain Copeland (percussion). All six are established figures on the Scottish folk scene.
Writer Jock Urquhart is organiser at the Ceilidh Place and comes from a literary Highland family - his late father was the noted actor and man of letters, Robert Urquhart.
Adam Sutherland was, until recently, fiddler with Croft No. Five, now a member of Peatbog Faeries and Session A9.
Iain Copeland is a member of the Peatbog Faeries and tours with Charlie McKerron's band Session A9.
Bo Jingham has played at the Celtic Connections Festival with Adam Sutherland.
Andy Thorburn is a skillful solo pianist and tutor, member of Blazin' Fiddles and composer for various theatre and dance productions.
Babelfish
Recorded at Skye Recording for BBC Scotland, an adventure into the increasingly blurred lines between all forms of music prevalent in Scotland today, with a healthy smattering of politics to whet your appetite.
Enjoy!
