Collette Harrington, recent graduate of University of California Santa Barbara, spoke at Rosamond Rotary’s Monday evening meeting at Shanghai Restaurant and spent last week raising funds from local Acton Agua Dulce businesses for the student medical project in Ecuador. She's youngest daughter of long-time Acton residents, Mike and Sally Harrington.
Her team of students will leave the United States during the week of July 7, 2008. travel to Quito, Ecuador, to work in a public children's hospital during the week and travel with local Ecuadorean physicians into rural areas on the weekends to dispense medical care and health education.
"This community has actually been awesome," she says, "I went around to local businesses for three hours and raised over $700. Some people will be sending in checks to my mom while I'm gone and I want to get together a “Thank You” list for publication when they all come in. They've really been great supporters."
ROSAMOND ROTARY CLUB is helping the team of medical students in rural areas of Ecuador to medicate parasites and dispense health education materials.
