Finally, an explanation of sorts...
Shifter were a loose collective of friends who took it upon themselves to write and play what they referred to as ‘music’. As enterprising sorts they then insisted on broadcasting it to startled and unsuspecting audiences around the Thames Valley.
Although Shifter operated as a live unit between November 1998 and April 2002, the band was formed as highly experimental sound collective ‘Interesting Phenomena’ in the early 1990s. They were the eventual owners of around 60 songs, some of which they could remember.
In their time they won a regional heat of the Budweiser Battle of the Bands competition, had chart topping stars at their gigs, and were banned by the Israeli Security Forces. Venues played included the Alleycat (now the Fez), the Rising Sun Pub, Scruffy Murphys, the Rising Sun Institute, the College Arms, Bar Oz, South Hill Park, Bracknell and a wedding, although it was their own drummer’s. They also played a couple of pantomimes, which they don’t like to talk about.
And then it all went quiet. The band split, due to irreconcilable geographic differences, and have left us with a noisy sonic legacy, hosted here, along with some new mixes.
