What is Orange County Independent Percussion?
Orange County Independent is an independent indoor percussion ensemble founded in 2011 that competes locally in the SCPA drumline circuit and nationally in the WGI Indoor Percussion circuit. Southern California is known around the world as being a hotbed of marching percussion activity and consistently produces some of the best marching percussion ensembles in the world. Orange County Independent will be competing in the WGI Independent Open division in 2012, and we hope to evolve as an ensemble and move into the Independent World Division in the near future. Our group is 100% funded by donations, member dues and fundraisers. High School students are welcome to audition as long as they do not have a competing indoor percussion ensemble at their school. Although we are not affiliated with any college or school, Orange County Independent is committed to building great relationships with local educational institutions and band directors. A high school student’s first priority must be high school!
What is SCPA?
SCPA stands for Southern California Percussion Alliance. It is an all volunteer nonprofit public benefit corporation and is not organized for the private gain of any person. It is organized under the California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation Law for public purposes. The specific purpose of this corporation is to promote the growth of the percussive arts through competition, performance and educational activities and to encourage goodwill, good sportsmanship and camaraderie through such activities. SCPA organizes and manages indoor drumline competitions at locations all over Southern California from February to March.

What is WGI?
Spawning from the organization Drum Corps International (DCI), Winter Guard International (WGI) was founded in 1977. WGI is a visual performing arts organization that hosts regional and national competitions for color guard (known as winter guard) and indoor percussion ensembles. Contests are held in the U.S. and Canada and WGI headquarters is located in Dayton, Ohio. The Indoor percussion division of WGI was established in 1992.
WGI was created as a competitive vehicle for the performing arts. The organization sets standardized rules and criteria, provides educational clinics and resources, and manages competitions on a regional, national, and international scale.
To achieve new standards of creativity, artistry and excellence in indoor marching percussion design and performance while providing a vehicle that will educate members in such a way that they will grow to understand and evolve to the greatest level of their potential as players and as human beings.
