Commentary


decided to try something a bit different this month. The newsletter got delayed a bit because I needed to finish getting my e-mail back in order, which I never entirely did after I had to redo my system last winter. My new setup handles e-mail groups in a way that’s incompatible with the old system so setting them up again is a big deal. I decided to do it the long way because that involves learning a few things that will ultimately be quite useful to know; I didn’t realize how long it would take! So I’m putting out a combined July/August issue, and expanding the format slightly.

  1. •Let me start with an important announcement. As of now I’m changing my official policy from being neutral with respect to whether you get the newsletter by mail or by e-mail to strongly encouraging you to switch to e-mail if you haven’t already. Here’s the reasoning and the full story.

  2. •First of all, if you don’t have e-mail or rarely check it, keep on getting it by mail; I have no plans to stop publishing the print version.

  3. •However, the printing and distributing are very time-consuming, and time is what I don’t have much of these days. There have been several issues that have been completed but never mailed because I didn’t have time to do it. Even when I do, the e-mail version nearly always goes out one to several days earlier.

  4. •If it’s an issue, I publish the e-mail version in a form that can be printed so you can still have a copy to put on your refrigerator or wherever else.

  5. •Even if you have a fairly slow connection the files aren’t all that large; they’ve ranged from 75K (card-sized) to under 300K (letter-sized).

  6. •Please note that this applies only to existing subscribers: for now I’m still not taking new subscriptions and I’m still not letting existing subscriptions expire unless someone tells me they don’t want to receive it anymore.

To switch, just send me an e-mail identifying yourself as a current subscriber to the newsletter, and letting me know what e-mail address you want me to use.

In other news, I’ve made some major updates to the web site <http://www.nhcountrydance.com>, including adding a page of links to web sites that have recorded music on them. There are some excellent web sites out there along those lines; check them out!

There are some good music and dance events coming up. In addition to the usuals, the Canterbury Fiddler’s Picnic is always a good time. Also the Bradford Reunion Dance should be fun. Walter Lenk has a recording of one of the original Bradford dances from Frank Fortune’s Barn in 1955 on his web site <www.configular.com/fortunesbarn>, as well as lots of other related information. I’ve got a story about the first reunion dance; I’ll put a link right here.



NH Country Dance Web Site Update

 

July Update. This is an occasional section to be included as it seems relevant, to give newsletter readers an update on recent changes and additions I’ve made to the rest of the web site.

As of today (Thursday 6/9), the newsletter is delayed in part because I’m busy making a bunch of changes to the web site and need to get them done before I can upload the web site (including the newsletter) to the web.

I’m gradually updating all the pages to the new layout. I’m also adding in a bunch of new content, especially in the Music and Fiddle Tunes sections.

  1. ‣I’ve added in material on learning by ear vs. from music, and some material on the New England tradition

  2. ‣Of interest to nearly everyone I should think, I’ve added a rather large section of links to other web sites that feature recorded music. If you haven’t looked at the variety of recorded music on the web, check it out; there’s lots of it out there!

  3. ‣I’ve also updated the Wednesday Night Jam Session pages and the Canterbury Fiddler’s Picnic pages to include information for this year; and the Ralph Page Weekend web site has everything we know about next year’s Weekend online.

August Update. I just added the Kingston Dance schedule through the end of this year.
