Coming to Surrender

I wear one flip-flop, one stiletto,
    shuffle and step,
    slide and clop.

I try so hard to cup you in my hands,
but you run out through my fingers.
I try so hard to drink you in,
but I can only get a sip.
Have I never thought of just wading in?

I wear one sleeve long, the other one short,
    shiver and sweat,
    freeze and melt.

I try so hard to fold you up,
but I cannot shove you in my pocket.
I try so hard to carry you along,
but mountains were not made to be dragged.
Have I never thought of just going into you?

My skin is alive,
    I can feel it crawling.
I think I am allergic to myself.

I am so itchy,
    you are driving me deeper.
I can no longer resist.

Speak to me!
I think I am finally ready to listen.

Now there is peace.
