Fuller of God

Before I became a missionary, I wondered what life would look like. I had been told tales as a child of missionaries living among the heathen savages, determined to “win souls.” How these courageous people risked everything in order to bring a few to a saving knowledge of Him!

Once I became a missionary, I found that there is limitless work to be done. There is always something that you can be doing to fill your time, but as I spent more time learning and living overseas, I began to wonder if “just getting them to say the prayer” was enough. Obviously, it isn’t.

God, in his mercy, led me to a better understanding of discipleship and teaching, and I became more passionate about education and furthering knowledge about this person to whom we dedicate our lives. But many fell away even with discipleship. Even some of the most dedicated would see their flame all but extinguished.

We asked ourselves, “what is the problem?” We wondered how we could fix the matter of our back door being almost as big as our front door. But now, I have come to understand this, as quoted by a missionary to the Philippines:

“What right then have I or any other person to come here and change the name of these people from Muslim to Christian, unless I lead them to a life fuller of God than they have now? Clearly, clearly, my job here is not to go to the town plaza and make proselytes, it is to live wrapped in God, trembling to his thoughts, burning with his passion. And, my loved one, that is the best gift you can give to your own town.” --Frank Laubach

A life fuller of God. Amen.
