industry-based learning
Unitec New Zealand’s Centre for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (NZCIE) is expanding its programme for international enterprise development that first commenced in the summer of 2003. The Global Enterprise Development Initiative 2005 (GEDI) involves local and international ‘learning partners’ completing new market, research, or development initiatives over a twelve-week period. The learning partners involve three parties: (1) New Zealand-based businesses who wish to explore or expand into new international markets (2) Postgraduate students engaged on Unitec’s executive entrepreneurship development programmes, and (3) International masters exchange students from business and technology schools in Europe and North America. Through bringing together the three types of learning partners in one programme GEDI not only helps corporate executives to understand the entrepreneurial mind, but also helps them gain ‘hands on’ experience in planning for the introduction of unorthodox market or product initiatives. Concurrently, the local and international students gain experience in applying in practice their business, management, and entrepreneurship knowledge. The full article outlines the aims and plans for the GEDI, and reports on the activities and achievements of the earlier initiatives.
