In iWeb photo captions are very limited, but if you read my blog about Ban Phu Leuy (which is in progress as of 4/16/07) then you’ll have a better understanding of how all these photos connect to tell the story of Ban Phu Leuy. Because I selected 162 photos for the gallery, and because iWeb will only allow a maximum of 99 photos in a gallery, I’ve divided the gallery into two galleries. The photos in these two galleries were taken over a period of about three years when I visited Ban Phu Leuy three times. A majority though were taken over Christmas 2000 during New Year celebrations.

This second gallery begins with photographs of ball tossing (pob pov) In a lot of these little villages, older teens who are more seriously looking for a prospective mate will travel to a larger village that’s holding a New Years celebrations. In the smaller villages like Ban Phu Leuy you will see younger children tossing ball, more in play. There are also photos of a shaman at his altar and performing a ceremony for a young child. You can see a video of the ceremony here. There are photos of boys playing with Hmong wooden tops, shots of children, some students in their little school, shots taken during a bacci ceremony the Hmong elders held for visiting their village, shots of village life, Mai’s grandma’s grave and finally shots taken of Ban Heuy Ot and a ceremony they held for me when I left Ban Phu Leuy and walked down to their village prior to our driving back to Luang Prabang.

Please, there really isn’t much detailed information about Hmong New Year’s traditions and if anyone thinks there is something I should add to my descriptions please email me.
