Teaching Positions
A alumnus of Boston University and a graduate of Berklee College of Music, Mr. Hazzard was asked to join the Berklee faculty in September of 1971. During his 12 year tenure Mr. Hazzard taught Ear Training, Harmony, Composition, Counterpoint, and Music History. He was appointed Chair of the Traditional Studies Department in 1977 and Director of Special Projects in 1980. Mr. Hazzard also authored three study texts published by the Berklee Press; a two volume set (History of Western Music: Middle Ages Through The Baroque and History of Western Music: Classical Period to Modern TImes), and Contemporary Techniques in Composition co-authored with Composition Department Chair William J. Maloof. Mr. Hazzard was also appointed conductor of the Berklee Concert Wind Ensemble in 1976, a position he held until 1983.
In 1983, Mr Hazzard left Berklee to accept a position as Director of Music at Lawrence Academy in Groton, MA. During his twenty-five years at Lawrence, Mr. Hazzard has served as Musical Director for the annual school musical, directed the jazz band, and taught music theory and composition classes. He founded the school’s a cappella group in 1986. From 2002 to 2008 he was the Choral Director. Retired from teaching, Mr. Hazzard now serves as the school’s Webmaster. He also manages the school’s recording studio, and is the faculty advisor to WRLA, the school’s radio station.
