Training
Training commenced in June and takes place twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings at 6.30pm, under the expert eyes of Paul Trevaskis, Benjie Thomas, Chris Lea and Peter Chambers, with the added input from fitness expert Steve Mitchell.

Attendances have exceeded 20 on every occasion, and with the season rapidly approaching numbers have swollen to over 30.  Several new players have been welcomed, together with several Colts who were moving up to the senior sides.

The Club aims to develop enjoyable open rugby in parallel with good coaching, and the accent is very much on players who want to play for Penryn.  There is much to be proud of here, not least 135 years of history, so why not come along and give us a try.

Senior Home PRESIDENTS NOTES

In last year’s notes I said that “a feeling of optimism was developing; I think it was justified”. I think this is still the case. There is a saying that not everything that can be measured is worth measuring and not everything that is worth measuring can be measured. How do you measure “pulling together”? How do you measure spirit? Both were in abundance last season and I predict will be again this season. No Rugby player likes losing, but if you give it your all and lose, that’s a big compensation. That’s what our senior players and coaches did last season, and they know, we all know, that they are better for it and will be better again this season.

We all know, too, that hot on their heels is a full house of enthusiastic Minis, Juniors and Colts with their dedicated coaches, organisers and parents. An official from Twickenham on a visit to our Club (they seem to like visiting Penryn) said they regard Penryn as a “Rugby centre”. Naturally I agree.

There seems to be a ground swell of turning away from professionalism (? pseudo-professionalism) in smaller clubs around the country. True amateur status has, I am sure, helped Penryn towards the hard to mention qualities I have already commented on, as well as helping our finances to begin recovering. For this we are hugely indebted to our coaches who give so much of themselves for Penryn and for Rugby. We are also hugely indebted to so many extremely hard-working volunteers who work twelve months of the year for the cause; much of this work behind the scenes.

We never have enough money; we never will. We have to make huge efforts to sustain, much less increase, our income; and the credit squeeze is making things more difficult, frighteningly so. We have many very generous sponsors without whom survival would be perilous. We thank them all.

Last May Penryn celebrated the day in 1973, when we played the 1971 victorious British Lions, with an unreservedly brilliant weekend reunion at The Falmouth Hotel. The spirit of The Borough came pouring out; the goodwill was immense. This is what makes Penryn RFC; this is what drives us; this is what ensures our future. All we have to do is always to pull together, to be a team. I thank you all.

As an amateur club Penryn relies on its members, supporters, local businesses and the people of Penryn to help keep rugby flourishing at The Borough.  Being a limited company we have to ensure that the club is sufficiently funded to survive the ever-increasing costs of just standing still! Needless Sponsorship and The Borough

I am pleased to report that a keen interest in the Club from all areas of local business not only endures, but is showing a positive increase. At Penryn we believe that we are at the heart of the amateur game. This belief is being supported by a significant number of players joining us for the new season. They clearly recognise the quality of our facilities coupled with an ongoing maintenance programme. Indeed our premises have been accredited as one of the very best in the Southwest. Sponsorship has made a great contribution in enabling us to reach and sustain these high standards.

I would like to thank all those sponsors who continue to support Penryn in such a very positive way. I would also like to welcome many new sponsors who have joined us in the last year. You are always welcome at The Borough where you will see that your contributions have been put to a most practical use.

As a new venture for the Club this year, player sponsorship is being introduced. If you have an employee, relation or friend who plays for Penryn, you can support him a very specific way. An agreed payment towards his Club kit is reflected by your name becoming attached to his in the Match Programme as his sponsor. The money is used exclusively for rugby kit and is of course giving great assistance to the Club in meeting one of the largest bills that we have.

If you would like to become a sponsor of Penryn Rugby there are many ways that this can be achieved. Please contact Malcolm Parker on 01872 863170 to discuss what you would like to do.
