PREVIEW
Saturday 21st November
Tribute Western Counties West League - Kingsbridge v Penryn
Saracens v Falmouth 2 - Friendly
After eleven continuous weeks of fixtures in the new 14 team Western Counties West league there was no Chief’s game last Saturday. This respite has allowed a period of recovery after a strenuous few weeks, but the additional fixtures have filled a void caused because it became increasingly difficult to arrange ‘friendlies’ on non league days. Once a club was knocked out of a County or National Cup competition there was little hope in filling blank dates with ‘friendlies’, and of course 50% of all clubs in a knock out competition are eliminated in the first round, with 75% after the second round.
After several weeks playing within The County, Penryn now travel to Devon on Saturday for a game with Kingsbridge, who have won all ten of their fixtures so far; their eleventh game, at Okehampton, has been postponed twice due to adverse weather conditions. When Penryn and Kingsbridge last played each other Kingsbridge ran out convincing winners in December, but when Kings came to Penryn in April two penalty goals from Alex Stuthridge, who has recently returned for the Club, gave The Borough a narrow win by six points to nil.
For Penryn the first half of the season (13 fixtures) will be completed with a home game versus Minehead Barbarians on 05 December. The second half starts with two return fixtures, North Petherton away and Okehampton at home to complete the run up to the Christmas break and the traditional match with Falmouth on Boxing Day (this year at The Memorial Ground).
At this stage The Borough lie in fifth place in Western Counties West, having won five, lost five and drawn against Truro. Top points scorer so far is Rob Banks, who is still turning out for the Colts, whilst Darren Pellow is the top try scorer with five. He is closely followed by three forwards, Dan Booth, Allen Jordan and James Mann, who have each scored four tries, an excellent boost for the all round 15 man rugby that the side is producing. In all eighteen players have scored tries in the league campaign.
Saracens are also having a very much-improved season. After ten games they have won five and lost five. It started well with three wins in a row, but tailed off after defeats by St Ives, Truro, Pirates Amateurs and Camborne. A return to form saw a convincing victory over Hayle 2 last week, and there is anticipation for the fixture versus Falmouth Seconds this coming Saturday. The kick off will be at 1430 at Penryn.
