Second graders are often introduced to weather units in the second half of the year. To facilitate their understanding of weather events, I open their laptops to The Why Files. We “control a tornado.”

We have a short conversation about tornado damage includng personal injury and property damage.

Then, I tell them that what they see may make them laugh a little, but to understand the damage a tornado can do.

We adjust the pressure difference only, not the funnel width and guess the F force of the tornado they created.

To wrap up the lesson, I take them to YouTube and look at real video of F4 and F5 twisters on file there.

They have a new understanding of tornado force and a different perspective on the weather, especially after we play with lightning !!!
