Dear Parent/Guardian


I would like to take this opportunity to explain our SEAL programme at Penketh High School.


From September 2009 SEAL becomes a compulsory requirement in all schools. It is a government initiative and includes the five main areas outlined below.

Five main areas of SEAL

(Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning)


Managing feelings

Managing how we express emotions, cope with and deal with changing difficult and uncomfortable feelings.

E.G. Relationships with people in school and at home, dealing with bereavement and life changing experiences such as moving schools and home.


Motivation

Working towards goals, and being more persistent, resilient and optimistic.

E.G. being positive, sticking at things to make you better at them, Examination success, Sport, Music, Drama


Empathy

Understanding others’ thoughts, feelings and valuing and supporting others.

E.G. Pupils help themselves and each other. They can put themselves in other people’s shoes and try to understand what they are feeling. Pupils listen to each other and try and support each other in times of need


Self awareness

Knowing and valuing myself and understanding how I think and feel.

E.G. understanding what you are good at and what your strengths and weaknesses are.


Social Skills

Building and maintaining relationships and solving problems, including interpersonal ones.

E.G. being polite, getting along with others, making friends.
