Learning objectives
•	To develop a whole school understanding of the global dimension in the curriculum
•	To develop knowledge, understanding & skills for global Citizenship
•	To develop an awareness of human rights & responsibilities & social justice in a global world
•	To develop awareness of conflict resolution, the promotion of peace & celebration of diversity
•	To develop a futures education to allow learners to reflect upon their hopes for the future
•	To develop their values & perceptions of themselves and the world in which they live in order to be a good citizen now and in the future.

We are proud of our partnership with kwadeda High School which was established in April 07. Our Head teacher and an Assistant Head teacher visited Kwadeda High School in Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa and established a positive relationship with staff and pupils. We have established a Partnership Agreement and have funded a reciprocal visit for four South African colleagues to visit our school for a week at the end of September 07.

We believe the partnership will support our holistic view of the children in our care. Our partnership has clear learning objectives to enrich the learning of pupils from both schools and to supports whole school Citizenship and the ECM agenda.

As part of our Learning for Life curriculum pupils in both schools have produced a DVD illustrating the school’s past, present and future and learners have included material about the wider community in which they live. The positive contributions from pupils at both schools have inspired pupils as they watch each other’s work and learn about, and from each other.

We have provided media training for the staff in our partner school and we donated a laptop and projector & media equipment, so pupils at Kwadeda High can watch the DVDs our pupils make and make their own DVDs to send to our students. We intend the themes of future DVDs to embrace the learning outcomes of the ECM agenda. We plan to use media as a way to sustain the link and allow pupils to communicate and learn from each other, as our partner school does not have internet or e mail. We are planning an ambitious project to make a film together with our partner school to build on the success of our recent school feature length film “Days.”

We are excited about our collaboration with kwadeda High as it provides opportunities for our children. Our school newspaper journalists also plan to cover the South African visit to our school. This newspaper will be posted to our partner school, so pupils their can read about the strengthening link between our two schools.

We are excited about our collaboration with kwaedea High as it provides opportunities for our children and pupils at both schools are excited about the link! (see DVD) Our pupils are gaining knowledge & understanding of wider global issues and are establishing friendships. We hope they will demonstrate feelings of solidarity with others and will articulate accurate and positive views of other races & cultures in an open and sensitive manner.

The best support we have of our application is the voices of our young people – watch the two DVDs made by pupils from both schools and you will see how our link has impacted upon self-esteem and how our children are benefiting from the very best learning experiences and developmental opportunities!

Absolutely Fantastic!

by D Kelleher

“I just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who got involved with the Christmas ‘shoe box appeal’. We collected a total of 28 boxes which was absolutely fantastic, so well done! Please pass on my thanks to your forms and classes. Thank you once again for your kind support.”

Apparently more came in later making a total of 34 boxes!

Last year England and Ireland donated 1.5 million boxes which mainly go to children who have been displaced or orphaned or are in hospital. “The Samaritans Purse” organises the collection and distribution: 10,000 boxes per lorry-25 of which, alone, go to Romania (250,000). The depot we were at had 9,700 at the last count, so were going to Kent to collect another 300 to fill the lorry. The boxes are packed in such a way as to maximize space and therefore keep the costs of shipping down.

Owing to our excellent response, the Samaritans arranged for a few of our students to go along to the depot, to see what goes on, with Miss D Kelleher, who last term, organised the Christmas box collection in school, with the support of our form tutors.

Sportsmark

“Congratulations on your fantastic achievement!”

by Ian Broadbridge

“ I am delighted to write to you confirming that Penketh High School has been awarded Sportsmark 2008. Congratulations on your fantastic achievement.”

wrote Ian Broadbridge, PE & Sport  Team Leader, Department for Children, Schools & Families, Westminster, London. He also thanked everyone involved at Penketh High.

Sportsmark 2008 rewards exceptional delivery of the National School Sport Strategy.

Penketh High School was automatically assessed for the award via the annual school sport survey. Our school has received the mark because 100% of pupils across the school were doing at least 2 hours high quality PE and school sport each week. Many pupils do much more than afterschool clubs: B’tec and GCSE  PE courses as well as Leadership Awards.

Strictly Penketh

Miss Jones has secured Sport UnLimited funding to subsidise Ballroom Dancing sessions for the 6th Form as a stress reliever during their exams. They have been learning Latin, Merenge and Jive also. To celebrate their success and pay for more lessons we are having a Strictly Penketh Gala Evening when the couple will show off their skills and be judged just like in the TV Show. There will be a trophy for the winners and demonstrations from Professional Dancers. Guests can bring their own drinks but refreshments will be available for purchase. (See Poster)

Please support this event as the students have worked very hard. Ronald Jagers, who is instructing them will be starting evening classes at the school in September so any of you who may be ‘inspired’ by this event or from watching the TV Show, please ‘watch this space’ for further details!

Penketh Strikes Gold Again!

“I am delighted that we have achieved Artsmark Gold status and I would like to offer congratulations to all staff who continue to offer outstanding provision in the Arts!” announced Headteacher, Mr J Hughes.

“Penketh is fortunate to have been granted the Gold Award for a second time in recognition of our high quality and ground breaking achievements in the Arts,” Mr G Baxter stated.

Artsmark is a national award scheme managed by Arts Council England that recognizes schools with a high level of provision in the arts.

By gaining an Artsmark, a school shows its commitment to the wider development of young people and teachers and to raising the profile of the arts in the school and local community.

“A credit to us and the work we do in the community!” commented Ms A Jenkins.

Maths Challenge

by  Mark Lamont

The UK Maths Challenge is a series of mathematics challenges to help gifted and talented children recognize and develop their skills. A group of Year 7 and 8 students recently took part in the Junior Maths Cahllenege on the 30th April.

The Junior Mathematical Challenge (JMC) is an introductory challenge for pupils in Years 8 (aged 13) or below. This takes the form of a twenty-five multiple choice questions to be sat in exam conditions. This is to be completed within one hour. The paper is divided into two sections. The first fifteen questions are supposed to be easier, and a pupil will gain 5 marks for getting a question in this section correct. The last ten questions are more difficult, and are worth 6 marks, but a penalty of 1 or 2 points for a wrong answer tries to prevent pupils guessing.

The top scoring 40% of the entrants receive bronze, silver or gold certificates based on their mark in the paper.

The Gold award is achieved by the top 6-7% of the entrants.

The Silver award is achieved by 13-14% of the entrants.

The Bronze award is achieved by 20% of the entrants.

CSI DAY

Behind the Scenes

Year 11 Applied Science groups had a great day looking at how scientific detection can help to solve crimes.

There was a hive of activity outside the Science block on 25th March when the Applied Science groups took part in a special CSI Day initiative.

The students did tyre and footprint treads, collected samples, analysed blood and identified possible links to crimes.

“It was a great day and the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience!” said Ms L Martland.

“The Boyfriend”

A nostalgic trip back to the “Roaring Twenties”

Performing Arts students, Danielle Segar, Year 13 and Nathan Reid, Year 12 appeared with great success in the recent Centenary Theatre musical production of “The Boyfriend” by Sandy Wilson, at The Brindley Theatre in Runcorn.

This comic pastiche delighted audiences during the first week in June.

The enthusiasm shown, particularly by the younger members of the cast, in the frequent songs and dances, was demonstrated with great style and panache in their performance!

Danielle was outstanding in the principal role of the extrovert and terribly English Maisie!

Centenary Show Experience

by Nathan Reid

“It was a new experience for me. Not only was I performing in a new theatre to me but for the first time I was the youngest member and I felt that I was part of a proper theatre company with adult performers.

I find it more enjoyable when I am performing with adults instead of children because I know that adults have had more experience in other shows. Before I joined Centenary I was only part of a drama school for younger performers and by joining an amateur dramatics society with older and more experienced performers I feel that I have taken a large step towards becoming the performer I would always like to be.

The following pupils completed their final assessed expedition over the weekend. They completed a 35km walk unaided through wind, rain and sun carrying tents/stoves/food etc over the 2 days. Their assessor commented that ' they were the best groups he's ever had'
