14. Mary STALEY. Born on 8 Sep 1844 in Greenburn, Parish Of Whitburn, Linlithgowshire, Scotland.106 Mary died in Kew, Victoria, Australia, on 5 Oct 1915; she was 71.11
Mary lived for 64 years in Victoria after her arrival on board the "Reaper" back in 1853, she married at 18 years in her parents home at Moonlight Flat, she had 14 children, 11 of whom had families of their own. At the time of her death in 1915 she was living at Barkers Road, Kew.
On 15 Jan 1863 when Mary was 18, she married Alexander MONTEATH (MONTEITH), son of Hugh MONTEITH (1792-1870) & Margaret HANNAH (1796-1877), in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia.107 Born on 2 Nov 1836 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland.108 Alexander died in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia, on 27 May 1893; he was 56.11
Alexander immigrated to Australia as a single man on an unassisted passage without any other members of his family when he was 20 years old. He boarded the "Mindoro" which left Liverpool on 22 April 1856 and arrived in Melbourne on 14 July 1856. He purchased the land prior to his marriage.and built the cottage where the family lived, he was described as a labourer on his arrival in Australia and he soon moved to Castlemaine where he worked as a foundry employee with Vivian & Co. and later with Thompson's F oundry where his eldest two sons, Hugh and Thomas, worked w ith him. Messrs Vivian & Co. foundry began operations in 1857 and was probably the earliest foundry in Castlemaine, it was partially destroyed by fire in 1877 when Thompson's Foundry purchased most of the machinery. Alexander acquired two adjoining blocks of land facing Verlin Street and Happy Valley Road in Castlemaine in an original subdivision of land in 1862, the two blocks are numbered 14 and 15 on the original subdivision plan, which still shows the name "A.Monteath" and an area of about 65,000 square feet with the measurements shown in acres, rods and perches. The original cottage was built by Alexander in 1862 and was still in use some 120 years later. He died at 56 years of age in 1893 of exhaustion caused by iron dust in his lungs from the foundry.

On 10 Apr 1871 when Elizabeth was 24, she married George Stribley HARRIS, son of Thomas HARRIS & Mary STRIBLEY, in Victoria, Australia.114 Born in 1845 in Cornwall, England. George Stribley died in South Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, in 1888; he was 43.115

Robert was a twin. On the 1903 Electoral Roll Robert is listed as a Foundryman of Gaol Hill, Castlemaine
In 1884 when Robert was 29, he married Agnes McDONALD, daughter of Donald McDONALD & Elizabeth McLAUGHAN, in New South Wales, Australia.122 Born abt 1862. Agnes died in West Coburg, Victoria, Australia, in 1938; she was 76.123

He was a twin, joined the Victorian Railways 14 November 1876 and was employed for many years. He voted in the Federal Referendum on Federation in 1899, he was then a railway Guard at Maryborough, he was reputed to have been a Guard on the "Overland" from Melbourne to Adelaide.
On 28 Feb 1880 when Thomas was 25, he married Mary TATTERSON, daughter of Edwin TATTERSON (1829-) & Sarah WHITEHEAD (1831-), in Malmsbury, Victoria, Australia.3 Born in 1858 in Richmond, Victoria, Australia.126 Mary died in South Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, on 13 May 1939; she was 81.127
Mary was the 4th. of 9 children, prior to her death she resided at 166 York St. Sth. Melbourne, 4 of her children had predeceased her. It is likely that Mary signed the Women's Suffrage Petition 1891 as there is a signature for M. Staley, Maryborough.

After the death of her husband, Frank during the World War 1, Florence never remarried. She was a Deacon in the Presbyterian Church and is fondly remembered by all her relations.
In 1916 when Florence Maud was 28, she married Frank Ernest FERGUSON, son of Jonathon FERGUSON & Mary BIRTLES, in Victoria, Australia.131 Born in Jan 1890 in Broadford, Victoria, Australia.132 Frank Ernest died in Bullecourt, France, on 12 May 1917; he was 27.
MILITARY: While living at Malmsbury, Frank enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 19 August 1916 shortly after his marriage. He was 26 years old and did his basic training at Bendigo. He was then posted to the 6/60th Battalion and subsequently departed Melbourne aboard HMAT A71, "Nestor" on 2 October 1916, as part of the 6th Reinforcements, arriving at Plymouth on 16 November 1916, barely three months after enlisting. On 30 December 1916 he was shipped from Folkestone to Etaples in France aboard the "Princess Clementine" arriving there on New Years Eve. Through the following months he did not enjoy the best of health, suffering with the mumps and various bouts of diarrhoea, by this time his battalion was part of the British Expeditionary Force. On the 12 May 1917 he was reported missing in action. One of his comrades found Frank "lying dead in No Man' s Land" at Bullecourt. He had died of very bad shrapnel wounds. A Court of Enquiry concluded he had died that day, he'd been in the Army barely nine months. He was posthumously awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal, his last resting place has not been determined, however his memorial plaque is at Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Franc e.

Robert Percival.
Born on 18 Oct 1894 in Maryborough, Victoria, Australia.133 Robert Percival died in Ypres, France, on 15 Apr 1918; he was 23.134 Buried in France.
Robert was the youngest of Thomas and Mary Staley's seven children, he enlisted in the AIF during World War 1, at the time he was living with his parents in Malmsbury, Vic . He was a Private in the 7th Battalion and enlisted on 10 July 1915 still three months from his 21st birthday. He embarked from Melbourne as part of the 13th Reinforcements aboard HMAT A64 "Demosthenes" on 29 December 1915, at the time his pay was five shillings (50c) per day. Robert was killed in battle at Ypres, there is a memorial headstone to him at Villers-Bretonneux, France and his name is on the Memorial to the WW1 Fallen at Kyneton, Victoria.

James married again in 1883 to Adeline Rashleigh, they had 4 children.

In 1890 when Jonathan was 27, he married Eva Louisa NETTLETON in Queensland, Australia.142
After Jonathan's early death, Eva remarried in 1891 to William Edward Thomas to whom she gave birth to a further 12 children, in a letter in Percival Staley's army records, Eva states that she had 3 sons in the services in WW1.

He served in WW1 where he was wounded in the leg and hospitalised in England, after returning to the Front, was taken prisoner in April 1918, he was repatriated from Germany to England in December 1918 and returned to Australia in 1919, he appears to have enlisted twice in WW2 and both times was discharged medically unfit. His name is on the Granite Wall at The Australian Ex Prisoners of War Memorial in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens
On 10 Jan 1931 when Percival Robert was 40, he married Matilda Dora ZUPP, daughter of Wilhelm August ZUPP & Paulina Christina REITHMULLER, in Queensland, Australia.144 Born on 24 Jan 1893 in Queensland, Australia.145 Matilda Dora died in Queensland, Australia, on 28 Jan 1965; she was 72.
