Christmas in November
Thursday, November 12, 2009
I saw my first Christmas sales commercial of the season on November 1. I was stunned when I heard holiday music on the radio a day or so afterwards. That weekend, I received flyers in the mail advertising holiday savings and the hottest toys of the season. Thanksgiving hasn’t even come yet, and I’m already being bombarded about December’s upcoming events. Early November is way too soon for Christmas to start advertising itself.
Come December, Christmas spirit starts. The last two weeks before Christmas, grocery stores stock up on eggnog. Drinking eggnog in November is just not right. Starting the celebrations in November takes away from this spirit and takes away from the excitement December brings with it. December is the month of Christmas. I’m Jewish and I celebrate Christmas, it’s just what the month is about! Having it start a month early drags it out into a huge spectacle that is about savings and bargains, not the true meaning of Christmas.
In a recent poll by PCNN seventy-three said that they felt that Santa Claus shouldn’t be coming to town until after Thanksgiving. I completely agree with these respondents; Thanksgiving is the bridge between November and the holiday season. That is when the countdown should begin. I understand that shopping needs to happen earlier so that gifts are purchased and wrapped on time, but November 1 seems a bit ridiculous. Winter just began to arrive, and I’m looking forward to Thanksgiving break, not Christmas break. It’s just too soon.
