so i haven’t bought anything off ebay for years.
but i decided to get this pentax 50 mm lens for my roomate for her birthday. so i found it, right? all excited i bid dollar by dollar until i was the highest bidder--just to figure what competition i was dealing with. i was winning at 34 bones, so felt pretty good because they were averaging around 60. i’m feeling pretty good, and ready to put in my maximum bid in the last 30 secs. i decide to read more on the item (after i bid of course) and to my utter dismay i figure out that its only the case! doh. so now i’m praying to get outbid. but who would want a lens CASE for more than 34 bucks? “gcd01975” with 21 seconds to go!! I Lost! Yahoo!

(this reminds me of the old school Newsboys song: “when we get what we dont deserve, its a real good thing, when we don’t get what we deserve, its a real good thing”)
i’m sure piper could preach a sermon using this analogy, we bid on things that we don’t even want! lets pray...

no not really!

so its been a while

well, i’ll post something.
today was a long day. woke up with some coffee and peanut butter toast. had house prayer at 8.30, i live with 7 other people. luke talked about taking time to trace the call of God on our lives, where it all started, and where it is now. noted how God is slow. it’s part of his nature.
i guess i first wanted to do missions when i became a christian, at 14. (i often forget that i learned how to play guitar and became a christian on the same weekend)
i found a book called ‘a godward life’ by j. piper, and was blown away by some of the reflections. one was about worship--an analogy about how a man honors the fresh, clean, tasty mountain stream water. he doesn’t pale up some swamp water from his farm and come and dump it into the pristine stream. he simply drinks from the water. he says ‘ahhh’...thats worship!
so that inspired me to look for more things by piper...and i found this sermon called ‘doing missions when dying is gain’. if you’ve never heard it...skip church this week and listen to it instead. joking! kind of.
so that got me fired up to go die for God somewhere!!
after a summer trip to new guinea i almost decided to go back there instead of college. glad i didn’t.
i went to wheaton...and i later put together that that sermon was actually a chapel message on wheaton’s campus. huh.
so i majored in bible and theology, and my junior and senior year met some innerchange peeps.
i got to start full time with IC about a year after school...amazing.
i don’t think i would have guessed that i would be living in the haight ashbury hanging with gutter punks and train hoppers and other cool drifters.
So...God weaving his kingdom, can’t deny it.

God met me during prayer this afternoon.
feeling totally drained and tired, i was trying to lift my heart to heaven and ‘get my head in the game’ (high school musical....thanks jess) my train of thought was, ok, i’m really tired and don’t want to go to dinner tonight and do bible study or do anything. God i need to draw from your well, from your power, your joy. then i started imagining the power of God...i was standing on a mountain, like everest high, and was slammed with the totality of creation power, the power that he upholds creation with. felt like the egyptians probably felt....standing on dry ground and then a whole ocean falls on top of you. i think that you can try and imagine that God is strong, but nothing is like hearing the roar of the lion...turning around and seeing aslan.
ok, so anyways, it was easy to pray after that!! we closed with singing ‘i lift my eyes up, up to the mountains, where does my help come from?...come and rescue me, come and give me life”
but i remained tired the rest of the night. thats ok though.
i sat at a table, one guy with oversized, black sunglasses with a huge smile sitting down and standing up the whole dinner, deep space nine. the next guy was trippin, he didnt stop talking about hating rap and loving rock and teaching about how hannable wasn’t a cannable but was an african who totally wipe out europe back in the day. the next guy was just cool :) the lady was afraid of people. woah, wrong table carolin!!

hagar’s song

so i wrote this song.
sang it at wheaton college last week.
it’s about hagar.(genesis 16) hagar and the kids i hang out with on the streets here in san franpsycho.
the angel of the lord goes out and hunts hagar down when she runs away from her abusive family, abraham and sarah, and asks her “where have you come from and where are you going?”
we ask that question every day here.
then hagar says of God, “you are the God who sees me”
isn’t that beautiful?
