St. Anthony Brass Quintet

 
About SABQ

Formed in 1993, The St. Anthony Brass Quintet has established itself among the finest chamber ensembles in Minnesota.  The quintet performs weddings and church services throughout the Twin Cities, and is currently the resident brass ensemble at St. Philip the Deacon in Plymouth, MN.  The quintet also presents frequent recitals featuring the best of brass quintet repertoire, including premier performances of works written for the group.  Minnesota Public Radio has featured the St. Anthony Brass Quintet on "The Music Room" with Eric Friesen and other special live broadcasts.  The quintet was a semifinalist at the 1995 Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition.  As members of Young Audiences of Minnesota, the quintet is committed to bringing educational concerts to schools throughout Minnesota.

 

Members

Dan Fretland, Trumpet, completed his B.A. in Trumpet Performance and Music Education from the University of Minnesota in 1998. Dan is a substitute with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and Minnesota Orchestra and has been a featured soloist with the Minnesota Contemporary ensemble Dan is an active freelance trumpeter in the Twin Cities area and is currently the Director of Bands at Thomas Jefferson High School in Bloomington, Minnesota.



Dan Massoth, Trumpet, is an active freelance performer in the Twin Cities area.  He has performed with the Rochester Symphony Orchestra and other regional orchestras.  Mr. Massoth has taught instrumental music in the Mahtomedi,  Wayzata and Osseo school districts. Currently Dan works at MakeMusic - Coda Music Technologies developing educational music software. He has studied with Gary Bordner of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, David Baldwin at the University of Minnesota and Manny Laureano of the Minnesota Orchestra.



Gregory Beckwith, French Horn, is a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. He attended Eastman School of Music in New York and The St. Louis Conservatory of Music in Missouri for horn performance. He has held full time performing positions with Air Force bands and the Mexico City Philharmonic in Mexico. Other performing has been as a free lance horn player in St Louis, in Mexico City, and the Twin Cities of Minnesota, which has included the Minnesota Orchestra, the Minnesota Opera, The Minneapolis Pops, and various ensembles in the area.  He can be heard on commercials for the Minnesota Twins, the Timberwolves, the Wild, for Arctic Cat, and on numerous recordings and broadcasts with the MN Orchestra as an extra in the horn section.  Greg learned instrument repair in 1992 and practiced in the Twin Cities for 11 years prior to becoming a full time instructor in the Band Instrument Repair Program at MN State College SE Technical in Red Wing, MN.  Greg continues to freelance on horn in the Minneapolis/St Paul area and perform brass instrument repair for area musicians.  



Trombonist Larry Zimmerman is a member of the Grammy winning Chestnut Brass Company, and is Principal Trombonist of the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra and the Minneapolis Pops Orchestra. He has performed around Minnesota with many ensembles, including the Minnesota Orchestra and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Larry is also active in the performance of period brass instruments, including Renaissance sackbuts and 19th Century saxhorns. He enjoys working as a soloist & chamber musician, and has recently presented programs of new music for trombone with piano, organ, tape, film, & other instruments.  Larry lives in Minneapolis and is a low brass instructor at St. Olaf College, Bethel University, and the University of St. Thomas.  He graduated magna cum laude with a degree in music education from St. Olaf College in 1986, and earned an MM in Trombone Performance from Boston University in 1989.



Tubist Paul Budde teaches euphonium and tuba at Gustavus Adolphus College and Minnesota State University-Mankato, and teaches music theory at the University of St. Thomas.  Paul has performed with the Minnesota Orchestra and is active as a soloist and clinician in and around the Twin Cities.  Paul has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, a Masters in Music Performance from the University of Minnesota, and is currently working on his PhD in Music Education from the University of Minnesota.  Paul’s Tubonium Conference (tuba-euphonium) at Gustavus Adolphus College will serve as the International Tuba-Euphonium Association's (ITEA’s) Upper Midwest Regional Workshop in the Spring of 2009.
